According to Edmund Searles in his article . Whale meat generally comes from the beluga whale and the bowhead whale. The latter is able to feed an entire community for nearly a year from its meat, blubber, and skin. Inuit hunters most often hunt juvenile whales which, compared to adults, are safer to hunt and have tastier skin. ![]() Ringed seal and bearded seal are the most important aspect of an Inuit diet and is often the largest part of an Inuit hunter's diet. They are no longer skilled in hunting like their ancestors and are growing more accustomed to the Qallunaat (. The high costs of hunting equipment. Ringed seals are hunted all year, while harp seals are only available during the summer. Through these, Inuit hunters are able to capture seals. When the seal comes up, the hunter notices movement in the indicator and uses his harpoon to capture the seal in the water. A walrus is too large to be controlled by one man, so it cannot be hunted alone. In the meantime, the other person would drive the harpoon into the ice through the harpoon loop to secure it. The hunters use active pursuit to harpoon the whale and follow it during attack. At times, Inuit were known for using a more passive approach when hunting whales. According to John Bennett and Susan Rowley, a hunter would harpoon the whale and instead of pursuing it, would . Caribou have excellent senses of smell and hearing so that the hunters must be very careful when in pursuit. Often, Inuit hunters set up camp miles away from the caribou crossing and wait until they are in full view to attack. When spearing caribou, hunters put the string of the spear in their mouths and the other end they use to gently spear the animal. The hunter cuts a square hole in the ice on the lake and fishes using a fish lure and spear. Instead of using a hook on a line, Inuit use a fake fish attached to the line. They lower it into the water and move it around as if it is real. When the live fish approach it, they spear the fish before it has a chance to eat the fake fish. Greenland. Because the climate of the Arctic is ill- suited for agriculture and lacks forageable plant matter for much of the year, the traditional Inuit diet is lower in carbohydrates and higher in fat and animal protein compared to the global average. When carbohydrate intake is inadequate for total energy requirements, protein is broken down in the liver through gluconeogenesis and utilized as an energy source. Inuit studied in the 1. Their urine volumes were also high, a result of additional urea which the body uses to purge waste products from gluconeogenesis. It has been suggested that because the fats of the Inuit's wild- caught game are largely monounsaturated and rich in omega- 3 fatty acids, the diet does not pose the same health risks as a typical Western high- fat diet. Vitamins A and D are present in the oils and livers of cold- water fishes and mammals. Vitamin C is obtained through sources such as caribou liver, kelp, whale skin, and seal brain; because these foods are typically eaten raw or frozen, the vitamin C they contain, which would be destroyed by cooking, is instead preserved. Many hunters will eat the food that they hunt on location where they found it. This keeps their blood flowing and their bodies warm. One peculiar custom of eating meat at the hunting site pertains to fish. In Overland to Starvation Cove: A History, Heinrich Klutschak explains the custom: . At these meals, no one is obliged to join in the meal; Inuit eat only when hungry. A woman does this by the shout of . This happens because the hunters are the coldest and hungriest among the camp and need the warm seal blood and meat to warm them. Hunters first eat pieces of liver or they use a tea cup to gather some blood to drink. Intestines are the first thing to be chosen and then any leftover pieces of the liver are consumed. Food sharing was first documented among the Inuit in 1. Food sharing was not only a tradition, but also a way for families to make bonds with one another. Once you shared food with someone, you were in a . Qallunaat believe that the person who purchases the food is the owner of the food and is free to decide what happens to the food. Searles describes the Inuit perspective on food by saying that . Searles and his wife were visiting a family in Iqaluit and he asked for permission to have a cup of orange juice. This small gesture of asking was taken as offensive because Inuit do not consider food belonging to one person. They are adamant about proving that their diet will make one stronger, warmer, and full of energy. One example is the drinking of seal blood. When interviewing an Inuit elder, Searles was told that . The two compared their strengths, warmth, and energy and found that Joanasee benefited most based on his diet. The Inuit belief is that the combination of animal and human blood in one's bloodstream creates a healthy human body and soul. According to Inuit hunters and elders, hunters and seals have an agreement that allows the hunter to capture and feed from the seal if only for the hunger of the hunter's family. This is shown as a sign of respect and gratitude toward the seal and its sacrifice. This offering is also done to please the spirit Sedna to ensure food supply. Once receiving seal meat, the woman felt better within hours and said that her quick recovery was due to the consumption of seal meat and blood. Because Eskimos frequently eat their meat raw and frozen, they take in more glycogen than a person purchasing meat with a lower glycogen content in a grocery store. Vegetarian and Vegan Diets: Nutritional Disasters Part 1. Over the years since the publication of my first book, I have been asked time and again if there is a vegetarian version of The Paleo Diet. Vegetarian diets are a bit of a moving target because they come in at least three major versions. We all know in principle that vegetarians do not eat meat, poultry or fish . Less restrictive are lacto/ovo vegetarians who limit their animal food choices to dairy products and/or eggs, whereas vegans eat plant foods exclusively. If we accept the idea that vegetarianism represents an ideal human diet, then this manner of eating must be part of a much larger or ultimate mechanism governing human biology. Any unified theory of human nutrition is a detective story in which scientists attempt to reveal or uncover biological systems that have been designed by, and put into place by evolution through natural selection. Accordingly, hypotheses regarding what we should and shouldn’t eat must be consistent with the system and ancient environments that engineered our current genes. If we are to buy into vegetarianism, then the system, evolution via natural selection, which shaped our present genome necessarily had to be conditioned over eons by a plant based, vegetarian diet. Otherwise, there is no rationale alternative hypothesis to explain why humans would . This information should be your first clue that there just may be some problems with vegetarian dietary recommendations created by humans for humans. What is that expression? I urge you to always let the data speak for itself, and don. ![]()
![]() ![]() I can guarantee you that the assessment of positive health effects, or lack thereof, caused by vegetarian diets is not just a straight forward matter involving objectivity and a mere sifting of scientific facts. Rather, this inquiry is politically charged involving charismatic individuals and well known scientists promoting a vegetarian viewpoint that is frequently at odds with the best science. If you are currently a vegetarian or vegan, one of the most powerful health expectations for adopting this lifestyle is that you will outlive your “hamburger eating” neighbors by escaping cancer, 7. If you have forced plant based diets upon your children, or unborn fetus they will also suffer. Now let’s let the data speak for itself and get into the science of vegetarian diets and health. In their 2. 00. 9 Position Statement on Vegetarian Diets,2. The American Dietetic Association tells us,”. Well- planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes.” I don’t know what planet the authors of this paper came from or what scientific journals they have been reading, but these statements simply are not supported by the data. To start with, if vegetarian diets are so healthful, then any reasonable person might expect that people eating plant based diets would have lower death rates from all causes than their meat eating counterparts. This question was never fully answered until 1. Dr. Key and colleagues at Oxford University conducted a large meta analysis comparing overall death rates between 2. ![]() ![]() I quote Dr. I have underlined and bolded the last words of this sentence to emphasize the fact that vegetarians do not fair any better than their hamburger eating counterparts when death rates for all causes are considered. A more recent 2. 00. The EPIC- Oxford Study), employing the largest sample of vegetarians (3. I quote the authors, “Within the study mortality from circulatory diseases and all causes is not significantly different between vegetarians and meat eaters.” The results of this study. American Dietetic Association. Taken at face value, it would appear that all vegetarian diets including vegan diets are nutritionally sound all by themselves and don’t require any additional nutritional supplements. In order to get to the true meaning out of the ADA. The last line informing us that supplements and fortified foods “sometimes” are useful, is an outlandish understatement. In reality, it is not just in some cases that supplements and vitamin fortified foods are required, but rather in all cases for vegan diets and in most cases for lacto/ovo diets. Consequently, if you decide to become a vegan, by default you will become vitamin B1. B1. 2 fortified foods. Any lifelong dietary plan that requires nutrient supplementation on a regular basis makes no sense from an evolutionary perspective. ![]() ![]() You don’t have to be an evolutionary biologist to realize that wild animals don’t take nutritional supplements, nor do they normally develop vitamin deficiencies when living in their native environments. You will recall that not a single hunter- gatherer society consumed a vegetarian diet. This choice was not just a haphazard decision on their part, but rather was dictated by evolution through natural selection. If our ancestral foragers didn’t eat B1. B1. 2 deficiencies which in turn impaired health and survival thereby worsening their chances of reproducing. Accordingly, any behavior that favored all plant diets would have been quickly weeded out by natural selection because of our genetic requirement for vitamin B1. Unlike modern day vegetarians, hunter- gatherers couldn’t simply pop a vitamin pill to make up for nutritional shortcomings in their diets. Without B1. 2 supplementation, every hunter- gatherer who ever lived would have become vitamin B1. I want to emphasize that this flaw in nutritional logic is not just a minor point to be shuffled under the rug as the ADA2. ![]() USDA1. 42 have done, but rather represents a colossal error in judgment for recommending vegan diets. To fully appreciate this massive breakdown in reasoning let. Because it was the last vitamin to be discovered (1. B1. 2 only became available as a commercial supplement in the 1. Consequently, every person on the planet who consumed a strict lifelong vegan diet before B1. I wonder if the ADA2. USDA1. 42 would recommend vegan diets to U. S. This case in point shows how absurd their rationale for vegan diets appears . Hermann and colleagues of 9. B1. 2 whereas a staggering 9. The elegance of this study was that the researchers employed a powerful new procedure to precisely monitor vitamin B1. The simple measurement of vitamin B1. B1. 2 in our bodies. Nevertheless, a study (The EPIC- Oxford Study) which examined simple B1. B1. 2 deficiencies were widespread within these groups. If we use the normal cutoff point (1. B1. 2 deficiency in the blood, then the data from the EPIC- Oxford study shows that 7. B1. 2 deficiencies. These two scientific papers are representative of nearly all other studies reporting vitamin B1. When this many people who follow vegetarian or vegan diets become vitamin B1. Even more disturbing is a report by Dr. Corinna Koebnick and co- workers in Germany showing that long term ovo/lacto vegetarian diets impair vitamin B1. The problem here is that maternal B1. B1. 2 depleted milk. B1. 2 deficiency in pregnant women is not just a simple benign nutritional problem, but rather has potentially disastrous health outcomes for both mother and child. B1. 2 deficiency in pregnant women is known to cause spontaneous abortions, weak labor, premature and low birth weight deliveries, birth defects, and the condition preeclampsia where mothers experience high blood pressure and damage to the liver, kidneys and blood vessels. Infants born from mothers with vitamin B1. These data hardly support the ADA’s position that “Well- planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood. Day Detox Diet. The author says that what makes you sick also makes you fat, and what makes you fat makes you sick. Health is a state of balance, and disease is a state of imbalance. When you begin to put on weight, especially belly fat, your biology shifts out of balance, veering into the unstable and unhealthy territory of disease . Imbalance occurs along a continuum, and the farther along that continuum you are, the more problems you have. The factors that cause your symptoms are the very same factors that cause weight gain, pre- diabetes, and diabetes. Those factors include inflammation, hormonal imbalance, toxicity, and more. As you follow the program, you. In order to break free from addictive substances and reprogram your biology, you need to detox from the druglike foods and beverages you.

The Promise. The Martha's Vineyard Diet Detox promises to peel off a pound a day and rid your body of toxins. But is it a good idea, given that your body detoxes itself, regardless of what you eat? On the plan, you drink liquid every 2 hours, take supplements that have a laxative effect, and do enemas. The plan boils down to three principles: rest, reduce, and rebuild. The rest comes from not chewing food and not working out. The reducing is the weight loss from being on a liquid diet. Rebuilding is what author Roni De. Luz says will happen to your cells after 2. De. Luz, who is a registered nurse and naturopathic doctor (not an MD), recommends a 2. She says it's great for metabolism and energy levels. The plan also calls for an organic coffee enema once a week, supplemented by more traditional water enemas on other days. What You Can Eat and What You Can't. De. Luz has detoxers stick to water, herbal tea, juices you make from organic vegetables and fruits, homemade soups, and powdered antioxidant berry and green drinks she sells on her web site. In a typical day, you will drink 4. Not allowed: Anything that has to be chewed, processed food, meat, cow. Again, there's no proof that any of this helps your body. Limitations: You're probably going to eat very differently than you did before this diet or after it ends. Cooking and shopping: You need to keep organic fruits and vegetables on hand, juicing and blending them into drinks and soups. Not required. In- person meetings? No. Exercise: De. Luz recommends doing very specific forms of movement, including using a Chi Machine and bouncing on a small trampoline called a rebounder to drain lymphatic fluids. Yoga, stretching, and 1- mile leisure walks are also part of the plan. Does It Allow for Dietary Restrictions or Preferences? Vegetarians and vegans: These allowed foods would work for you: Juiced, pureed, or powdered garlic. Carrots. Cucumbers. Celery. Collard greens. Eggplant. Kale. Beets. Onions. Radishes. Sweet potatoes. Summer squashes. Most green vegetables. Tomatoes. Purple cabbage. Gluten- free: You'd need to check the diet's web site to see if the kit of products is gluten- free. What Else You Should Know. Costs: If following the plan to the letter, you would also take enzyme capsules, an herbal cleansing formula, and aloe vera. De. Luz sells all of this on her web site in a kit for $1. A better, cheaper, and less punishing path to weight loss and good health, say nutritionists, is to eat a variety of fresh produce, lean meats, low- fat dairy, and whole grains while avoiding processed foods, salt, and too much alcohol. What Dr. Michael Smith Says: Does It Work? There are no known health benefits to the diet, supplements, products, and techniques that De. Luz recommends in her book, such as not chewing, coffee enemas, and laxatives. Despite the popularity of . It may even be harmful for some people. You won. But much of that will be water and muscle, since the plan offers very little protein. Your metabolism will also likely plummet, making it even harder for you to burn calories throughout the day. Any diet that promises you. You'll likely regain the weight after you go back to eating normally. You also may have headaches and feel fatigued during this detox plan. Overall, you probably won. You need to find a program that you can stick with and that will help you manage your health. If you have diabetes, this diet could be harmful. If you take diabetes medicine, your blood sugar could fall to dangerously low levels. Before starting any strict diet program such as this, it. Such a strict program will leave you frustrated.
